Jacob (Jake) Lamartine, counseling intern at North Star Psychological Center

When your mind won’t slow down

Maybe you replay conversations long after they’re over. At the end of the day, your mind keeps going when you wish you could rest. Or an experience from your past still affects how you feel now.

If that sounds familiar, I want to help you find a way to feel more present in your own life. Our sessions are a place to slow down, talk openly, and begin figuring out what matters most to you.

What it's like working together

I want our sessions to feel calm, judgment-free, and grounded in genuine human connection. You don’t have to arrive knowing exactly what to say or what needs to change.

In our first few sessions, we’ll get to know each other and explore what you’ve been experiencing. We’ll make a plan together and identify steps you can begin taking in your daily life. As we go, we’ll practice skills you can carry with you outside our sessions.

I don’t expect you to eliminate every painful thought or feeling. Instead, I’ll help you find a different way to respond to them. We’ll clarify what matters to you and work toward actions that reflect the life you want to live.

Areas of focus

I work with people experiencing anxiety, depression, OCD, trauma-related concerns, life stress, and difficult adjustments. That can include getting caught in repetitive thoughts, struggling to relax, or feeling weighed down by past experiences.

I offer individual counseling and group services.

Background and training

I’m a second-year master’s-level student in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program at the University of Iowa and a counseling intern at North Star. I began working in mental health in 2026.

My approach draws on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and strengths-based counseling. Outside of work, I enjoy collecting records, fitness, and watching baseball.
